10 Ways to Promote Your Free Download (and Get More Unlocks)
A great gate nobody sees is just a nice page. Here is how to put it in front of people.
Creating a download gate takes a couple of minutes. Getting people to it is the real work. Here are ten tactics that work for independent artists, most of them free.
1. Put it on SoundCloud, properly
Add “Free Download” to the track title, paste the gate link in your track’s buy/custom link field and in the description. This is where most of your downloads will start.
2. Change your bio link for release week
For a few days, point your Instagram and TikTok bio straight to the gate. One destination, one action.
3. Post a 15-second teaser
Pick the most exciting moment of the track — the drop, the hook — and post it as a short video on TikTok, Reels and Shorts. End with “Free download, link in bio.”
4. Use Story link stickers
Stories with a link sticker let fans reach your gate in one tap. Post over several days: announcement, teaser, “it’s out”, reposts from fans.
5. Email your list
Your subscribers are your warmest audience. A short personal email with the gate link often converts better than any post.
6. Share in communities — the right way
Discord servers, forums and groups in your genre can be powerful, but only if you are a real member. Contribute, give feedback to others, then share your track where self-promotion is welcome.
7. Send it to DJs directly
Make a short list of DJs who play your style. Send a personal message with the gate link, BPM and key. One DJ playing your track in a set can reach hundreds of people in a night.
8. Get your collaborators involved
Featured artists, remixers, vocalists, the artwork designer: ask them all to share on release day. Different audiences, same link.
9. Pitch blogs and channels
Many electronic music blogs and YouTube channels feature free downloads. Send a short, polite pitch: who you are, one line on the track, the gate link, a private stream link.
10. Aim for the Top 30
