# Why Free Music Still Matters: The Culture of the Free Download

Long before streaming, music scenes grew because people passed music around. Tapes copied between friends. Mixtapes handed out at shows. White labels slipped to DJs. Free music isn’t a loophole in the music business. It is how new music has always found its first listeners.
